First Presbyterian Church of Hickory
Hickory, NC
The new fellowship space for 400 members can be divided into two spaces with an operable wall, and includes a permanent stage & commercial kitchen. The severely sloping site, along with limited site space, required that the new building be three levels. The entire church campus was made handicapped accessible with the addition of a new elevator and new interior ramp.
Renovations include the existing sanctuary, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, with vast enhancements made to the acoustics of the space. The chancel was reshaped including totally new wood carvings and chancel furniture, with improved and enlarged space for choir, baptism and communion. After the original project was completed, a new columbarium and memorial garden was added, including 136 wall niches.
